Mahal Kalan, Sangrur: Persistent heavy rainfall over the past few days has created serious problems for local residents, particularly daily wage labourers, in the region. In village Beehla under the Mahal Kalan area, the roof of a labourer’s home collapsed due to the incessant downpour, causing significant damage to the household belongings.
The affected resident, Nikka Singh, son of Gokal Singh, a resident of Beehla, told reporters that continuous rain in recent days weakened the structure of his home. He said that one room’s roof completely caved in while parts of another room were severely damaged, resulting in the destruction of all furniture, appliances, and other household items. The collapse has caused considerable financial loss to the family.
Recalling the incident, Nikka Singh said, “We were sitting in the courtyard, having our meal, when suddenly the roof collapsed. Luckily, none of our family members were inside the room at that moment. Had we been eating indoors, the falling roof could have seriously injured us or worse.”
The family has urged the Punjab government and the district administration to provide immediate financial assistance for reconstruction. They appealed for support to rebuild their home from scratch so that they can safely resume living in it.
Local authorities have yet to comment on the incident, but residents have expressed concern over the vulnerability of homes in the area during the ongoing monsoon. The incident highlights the urgent need for preventive measures and support for low-income families whose homes are at risk from extreme weather conditions.
